Prodigy, co-founder of hip-hop duo Mobb Deep has died, a representative for the rapper has confirmed, he was 42.
His publicist said in a statement to XXL Magazine:
It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep.
Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis.
As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.
News first broke of his passing when fellow Queens Bridge rapper Nas posted a picture of Prodigy on his Instagram with the caption “QB RIP King P”
Born Albert Johnson in 1974, Prodigy was the son of a long line of musicians and shot to fame in 1993 with the release of Mobb Deep’s debut album ‘Juvenile Hell’ and continued releasing music and touring together with the most recent release coming in the form of 2014’s ‘The Infamous Mobb Deep’.
Prodigy released a collection of collaborations last year via BitTorrent.
